Major Flavour Compound: Allicin

Parts Used: Bulb

Shallot is a type of bulbous plant closely related to onion, but with a milder, sweeter flavor and finer texture. It grows in clusters of small, elongated bulbs and is widely used in Southeast Asian, Middle Eastern, and European cuisines. Shallots are rich in sulfur compounds, antioxidants (such as quercetin), and essential nutrients including vitamin C, vitamin B6, and manganese. Traditionally, they are valued for their antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and heart-supporting properties. Shallots are used both fresh and dried, adding depth to sauces, dressings, stir-fries, and spice blends.
