Exploring Larb Spice Culture in Lamphun
The project team conducted a field visit in Lamphun Province, known as a center of laap spice production in Northern Thailand. The visit aimed to explore local spice ingredients and connect networks between spice farmers, producers, and local food businesses.
The journey began at Ban Pa Puai, Ban Hong District, a community known for growing long pepper (Dee Pli). Discussions with local farmers revealed that while the demand for long pepper remains high, the number of growers is limited, and production cannot fully meet market demand.
The team then continued to Ban Pa Tueng, Thung Hua Chang District, with the kind coordination of Mr. Sompon Paengchai. Here, the group visited small-scale organic farms cultivating spices such as coriander seeds and caper spurge seeds. Although the farms are not large, local farmers effectively manage crop rotation throughout the year.
This field visit also created opportunities to connect spice-growing communities with laap spice producers, strengthening collaboration and supporting the development of local food economies in Lamphun.
